The True Crime in Old Sydney 'Pub Table' Talk Series - Episode 3

Over-sexed, Over-paid and Over Here: When the Yanks came to Surry Hills & Darlinghurst during WW2

During the Second World War, Sydney became the destination for tens of thousands of US servicemen on rest leave. These “yanks,” as Sydneysiders typically called themed, came to Sydney with pockets of cash and looking for a good time. Dancing, sex, drugs and booze were all high on the list for a good night out. The demand for vice was insatiable, and huge profits were to be had for those who could deliver the goods. Consequently, behind the neon signs and cabaret acts lurked a violent underworld of gangs fighting their own war, a war for control of the markets of vice and pleasure. Being the centre of Sydney’s underworld, much of this war was fought on the streets of Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.

In this talk you will hear how Sydney's underworld behaved while the nation was in a state of total war. How the US military enforced racial segregation on their troops while in Sydney and forced the African American GIs into the working class neighbourhoods of Surry Hills and Darlinghurst. Discover where the 'black only' clubs, pubs and brothels were located. You will also hear stories about the significant gangland hits and murders during the underworld war of 1945-46.

Have you ever walked down an eerie old laneway or into an old building, somewhere in Sydney, and wondered what the walls could tell you if they talked?

Local historian Elliot Lindsay has spent years looking over old maps, vintage photos, archived police evidence, coroners reports, newspaper articles, and interviewing local ‘old timers’ to uncover Sydney’s lost stories. He has compiled the most exciting and interesting stories to share with the public in a series of ‘pub table’ talks crafted to enthral, inform and entertain. Some of the stories have been lost for over 180 years.

Eat, Drink and Listen to Old Tales

Join Elliot every second Tuesday at The Royal Albert Hotel, Surry Hills, to hear these remarkable and sometimes frightening stories about Sydney’s dark, mysterious and eccentric past. These are not lectures but a series of ‘bar room’ talks where you will hear masterfully told stories over a drink and a hearty meal. The last 30 mins of the evening is an open forum where people can ask questions, discuss the stories, share some stories of their own or just sit back and listen.
